Article body
Morten Wieghorst has ended his six-year association with Scottish champions Celtic FC and joined Brøndby IF.
Three-year deal
The Danish international was offered another year at Parkhead, but has opted to return home and sign a three-year deal for new Brøndby coach Michael Laudrup.
Full recovery
Wieghorst, now fully recovered from the crippling brain disease Guillane Barre Syndrome which robbed him of a year of his career, made only five senior appearances for Martin O'Neill's side last season and feels that at 31 he needs regular first-team football.
'Difficult decision'
He said: "This has been an extremely difficult decision for me to take, and it took some to arrive at. I have had many tremendous years at Celtic, and it is just great to have had the opportunity to play a part at such a fantastic club.
'Great support'
"I would like to thank the manager, players and backroom staff at Celtic for all the support they have given me over the years, and I would also like to thank the fans for their great support, particularly during my recent illness. I will never forget that."
Dual roles
Wieghorst joined the Glasgow club in 1996 for €770,000 from Dundee FC and was a useful squad member able to operate just as effectively in defence or - as he played more regularly - in midfield.
World Cup spot
He won all three domestic trophies during his spell in Glasgow and such was his form in the title-winning season of 1998, that he forced his way into the Denmark squad for the FIFA World Cup in France. Injury and then illness curtailed his performances for club and country and the former Lyngby FC player has decided to start afresh with Brøndby.
