Iván Alonso struck with 14 minutes remaining to give RCD Espanyol a 2-1 home win against Athletic Club and move them within three points of their seventh-placed visitors.

RCD Espanyol moved within three points of seventh-placed Athletic Club after a 2-1 home win against the Bilbao side on Monday night.

Iván Alonso scored with 14 minutes remaining to break the deadlock after the sides went into the break at 1-1. Pablo Daniel Osvaldo had given the hosts a 35th-minute lead, but winger Markel Susaeta replied for the visitors just before the interval. Espanyol stay eighth but halve the gap to their visitors as both clubs aim to gain a UEFA Europa League berth for next season.
