Former FC Barcelona, Chelsea FC and Spain defender Albert Ferrer is to make his senior coaching debut with Dutch Eredivisie side BV Vitesse.
The 40-year-old has signed a deal running until summer 2012 to replace Theo Bos, who stepped down this week. Part of Barcelona's 1992 European Champion Clubs' Cup-winning team under Johan Cruyff, Ferrer has been working at the Blaugrana's youth department having graduated from the same coaching course as former team-mate Pep Guardiola.
"In the past I have had offers from clubs, but I was not ready," said Ferrer, who will be assisted by Albert Capellas Herms – also arriving from Barcelona's academy – and former Netherlands goalkeeper Stanley Menzo. "I do not think my lack of experience will be a problem. I like the Barcelona style of play but no team has players as good as theirs." His new side lie 16th in the 18-club Eredivisie and Ferrer's reign begins at NEC Nijmegen on Sunday.
