Newcastle United FC have confirmed the signing of Argentina defender Fabricio Coloccini from RC Deportivo La Coruña on a five-year contract. The size of the fee was not disclosed but reports in both England and Spain suggest it is in the region of €13m.

Experience
The 26-year-old made more than 100 appearances at Deportivo after joining from Villarreal CF in a €3m deal in 2005. Coloccini moved to Europe with AC Milan in 1999 from CA Boca Juniors, but never made the breakthrough in Italy and had loan spells at CA San Lorenzo, Deportivo Alavés, Club Atlético de Madrid and Villarreal before finally settling in La Coruna.

Debut
Coloccini, a 2001 FIFA U-20 World Cup winner and 2004 Olympic gold medallist with Argentina, has been capped 27 times at senior level. He will wear the No2 shirt at St. James' Park. Meanwhile, Coloccini's countryman Jonás Gutiérrez has been given the green light to feature in Sunday's opening Premier League fixture away to the champions Manchester United FC. The 26-year-old joined from RCD Mallorca last month.
