Liverpool legend passes away

Members

The first Liverpool FC captain to lift the European Champion Clubs' Cup, Emlyn Hughes, has died aged 57.

Collapsed at home
Doctors discovered that Hughes had a brain tumour last year after he collapsed at his home near Sheffield. Surgeons removed the majority of the growth but radiotherapy could not eradicate the tumour, which became cancerous and required chemotherapy. "It has stopped growing but I am not out of the woods yet," said Hughes in February. "We will have to see how things go."

European success
Nicknamed 'Crazy Horse', Hughes was awarded an OBE in 1980 in recognition for a marvellous career which saw him win four league championships, an FA Cup, two UEFA Cups and 62 England caps. Hughes was also part of the Liverpool teams that won the European Champion Clubs' Cup in 1977 and 1978, becoming the first Reds captain to lift the trophy following the 3-1 victory against VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach in Rome.
