The midfielder was an integral part of Jock Stein’s historic ‘Lisbon Lions’ side who became the first British team to lift the European Cup when they came from behind to beat Italy’s Inter Milan 2-1 on a memorable evening in Portugal.

Auld went on to help Celtic to reach a second Champion Clubs’ Cup final in 1970, when the Glasgow outfit lost by the same scoreline against Dutch rivals Feyenoord in Milan.

During two spells when he made 283 appearances and scored 85 goals for the Hoops, Auld also won five Scottish league titles, three Scottish FA Cups and four League Cups. In between, he spent four years at Birmingham City, making over 100 appearances and winning the English League Cup in 1963.

He eventually finished his playing career with Hibernian. Capped three times for Scotland, Auld twice managed Partick Thistle, as well as Hibernian, Hamilton Academical and Dumbarton.

"I don't think words can ever adequately describe what Bertie meant to the club and our supporters,” said Celtic chairman Ian Bankier. “He was a giant of a player, a giant of a man and quite simply Mr Celtic. He scaled the greatest of heights as a player with his talent.”
