Former FC Dinamo Moskva and USSR player Vladimir Kesarev, a member of his country's 1960 UEFA European Championship-winning squad, has died at the age of 84.
One of the best defenders of the Soviet era, Kesarev spent his entire career with Dinamo, helping the capital side to the league title in 1957, 1959, and 1963.
He earned 14 caps for the USSR, five of them coming at the 1958 FIFA World Cup in Sweden. Two years later he was selected for the inaugural European Nations' Cup, the continent's first major national competition, but did not play at the four-team final tournament due to appendicitis.
In a statement, Dinamo said: "His name is closely associated with Dinamo's greatest successes, not only in the USSR but also abroad. After finishing his playing career Vladimir Kesarev trained several generations of young talent at the Dinamo academy and was involved in club life until his last day."
