Croatia has been selected as host nation of UEFA Futsal Euro 2012.
The Croatian Football Federation (HNS) was appointed to stage the next UEFA European Futsal Championship final tournament at Wednesday's UEFA Executive Committee meeting in Tel Aviv. The other nations who bid were Belgium and FYR Macedonia and qualifying is scheduled for spring 2011.
Two venues are slated to be used for the final tournament, which is currently scheduled for February 2012: the 15,200-capacity Zagreb Arena and the 10,931-seater Spaladium Arena in Split, both opened for the 2009 World Men's Handball Championship. The HNS recently staged the 2009 UEFA Regions' Cup in the Zagreb region.
In hosting the Futsal Euro finals, Croatia follows Hungary, who staged the first expanded 12-team event this January, Portugal (2007), the Czech Republic (2005), Italy (2003), Russia (2001) and Spain (1999). Last week the 2012 FIFA Futsal World Cup, to be played in a different season to the UEFA Futsal Euro, was awarded to Thailand.
