A lone strike from Vinicius Bacaro gave hosts Italy a 1-0 victory against Ukraine in the 2003 final. The elegant left-footed player had threatened to score all night in Caserta with a number of efforts from seemingly every angle, but kept the thousands of home fans waiting until ten minutes from time.
It was just reward for Italy who had missed out on a place in the final in 2001 after a penalty shoot-out defeat by Ukraine. Just as in 2001 they reached the semi-final after three wins in the group stage, this time against Russia, Czech Republic and Slovenia. Ukraine and Spain advanced from Group B at the expense of Portugal and Belgium. In the semi-finals Italy saw off holders Spain 2-1 while Ukraine defeated the Czech Republic 5-1. Ukraine were back in the final, but against Italy they would miss out again.
