European Qualifiers: Lukaku, Germany and Spain celebrate

Germany, Spain and England cut loose with substantial victories in Sunday's European Qualifiers, while Romelu Lukaku marked his 100th Belgium appearance with his 67th international goal and Robert Lewandowski took his Poland tally to 72.

Yann Sommer saved a Jorginho penalty as Italy drew 0-0 in Switzerland, but the stalemate was enough to secure the European champions a continental record: it was their 36th consecutive game unbeaten. They have not lost since a 1-0 UEFA Nations League defeat by Portugal on 10 September 2018.

Germany and Spain win big
Germany trailed Armenia at the top of Group J before kick-off but that was soon forgotten as Serge Gnabry scored twice in the first 15 minutes, with Marco Reus, Timo Werner, Jonas Hofmann and Karim Adeyemi also on target. As for Spain, they bounced back from their first FIFA World Cup qualifying defeat in 28 years with a comprehensive win over Georgia – José Gayà, Carlos Soler, Ferran Torres and Pablo Sarabia the scorers.

Milestones for Lukaku and Italy
Romelu Lukaku marked his 100th appearance for Belgium with his 67th international goal as the Red Devils secured a comfortable victory against the Czech Republic. The Chelsea striker is only the sixth player to earn 100 caps for the Red Devils. Meanwhile, Italy failed to win for the second successive game, but their record-breaking 36th match unbeaten was some consolation as the Azzurri were held by fellow UEFA EURO 2020 notables Switzerland.

Bukayo Saka marked his 20th birthday with a goal as England cruised past Andorra, while Gareth Bale hit a hat-trick in Kazan, including a stoppage-time winner, as Wales came from behind to beat Belarus. Elsewhere, Robert Lewandowski scored twice in Poland's 7-1 stroll in San Marino but was upstaged a little by team-mate Adam Buksa, who got three goals.

Depay at the double
The Netherlands remain a point behind Group G leaders Turkey after easing past fourth-placed Montenegro. Memphis Depay fired a clinical double either side of half-time – the first a penalty – before Georginio Wijnaldum's strike and a stunning curler from Cody Gakpo sealed an emphatic victory for Louis van Gaal in the first home match of his third spell as coach.

Les Bleus draw comfort
Anthony Martial scored his first international goal for five years to earn France a point as Ukraine made it five draws from five in Group D. Martial found the net early in the second half to cancel out Mykola Shaparenko's stunning strike, his first international goal, which reduced the Dynamo Kyiv midfielder to tears. Substitute Moussa Diaby struck the post as France sought a winner, but a captivating contest ended all square.

Shane Duffy’s late header in Dublin rescued the Republic of Ireland, cancelling out Emin Makhmudov's wonder strike for Azerbaijan to give both teams their first qualifying point. Top of the scoring charts, Aleksandar Mitrović swelled his goal haul to seven, striking twice in Serbia’s defeat of Luxembourg, while Erling Haaland converted from the penalty spot as Norway saw off Latvia.
