Netherlands 2-3 Czech Republic
19/06/04, UEFA EURO 2004 group stage
The Czechs came back from going 2-0 down inside 19 minutes in Aveiro to qualify for the quarter-finals, goals from Jan Koller, Milan Baroš and Vladimír Šmicer eclipsing Wilfred Bouma and Ruud van Nistelrooy's strikes. "I think it was the best match I played in – a wonderful game that had everything," recalled Čech, who contributed a vital save from Andy van der Meyde. "I watched footage of that game a while ago and I realised again what a great match it was. A lot of chances, a great atmosphere and we won it."
Czech Republic 1-0 Norway
16/11/05, FIFA World Cup play-off second leg
Tomáš Rosický's goal in the 35th minute secured the Czech Republic a place in their only FIFA World Cup finals since the break-up of the former Czechoslovakia. Vladimír Šmicer had scored the only goal in the first leg, but Čech's contribution was no less crucial, with the goalkeeper – then just 24 – making a number of vital blocks to keep his side on course. "I'm proud of how my players played," coach Brückner reflected afterwards.
Germany 0-3 Czech Republic
17/10/07, UEFA EURO 2008 qualifier
First-half goals from Libor Sionko and Marek Matějovský, and a third midway through the second period from Jaroslav Plašil, condemned Germany to their first defeat in 24 UEFA European Championship qualifiers, and sent Karel Brückner's Czechs to the finals in Austria and Switzerland. Čech made two fine saves from Bastian Schweinsteiger, and said: "Germany were fresh from winning bronze medals at the FIFA World Cup and were expected to win our group, but we won this game 3-0 – what a great away result."
Switzerland 0-1 Czech Republic
07/06/08, UEFA EURO 2008 group stage
"It was the opening match of the championship," said Čech as he looked back on this game in Basel. "Furthermore we managed to win it 1-0, so it was really a match to remember." Čech kept a clean sheet despite having a partisan home crowd against him at St. Jakob-Park, with substitute Václav Svěrkoš scoring the only goal of the game in the second half.
Montenegro 0-1 Czech Republic
15/11/11, UEFA EURO 2012 play-off second leg
Following a 2-0 win in the opening leg at the Letná Stadium in Prague, the Czechs held their nerve against ambitious Montenegro, with Čech making a number of crucial saves in both fixtures. Victory ensured that the Czech Republic would continue their record of appearing at every EURO since the break-up of Czechoslovakia. "It was a match that took us to the EURO," Čech recalled. "We were under huge pressure. It was a really vital away win."
