Frank Vercauteren has been handed the reins of the Belgian national team for a friendly tournament in Japan later this month while a permanent replacement for René Vandereycken is sought.
Long-term options
Vandereycken was dismissed a month ago after home and away defeats by Bosnia-Herzegovina left the Red Devils fourth in 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifying Group 5, having earned seven points from six games. Louis van Gaal, Dick Advocaat, Hugo Broos, Marc Wilmots and Jean-François De Sart have all been mooted as possible replacements, but while the Belgian Football Association assess their long-term options they have announced that Vercauteren will take charge for the meetings with Chile and Japan at the end of May. Former RSC Anderlecht coach Vercauteren, 52, was formerly Vandereycken's assistant in the national setup.
