Portugal prevail as Rooney sees red

England 0-0 Portugal
(aet, Portugal win 3-1 on penalties)

Ricardo made three saves to deny ten-man England, who had Wayne Rooney sent off.

Ricardo made three penalty shoot-out saves as Portugal reached the FIFA World Cup semi-finals at England's expense. England clung on for a goalless draw after extra time, playing nearly an hour with ten men following the sending-off of Wayne Rooney.

Five failures
Owen Hargreaves was the only England player to convert a penalty, as Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher all saw their efforts saved. Cristiano Ronaldo dispatched the decisive kick for Portugal, for whom Hugo Viana and Petit also missed.

Rooney isolated
England lined up in a 4-5-1 formation with Wayne Rooney on his own up front, and the Manchester United FC striker looked isolated with few chances to shine. With more than two-thirds of the crowd in the covered arena cheering them on, it seemed at times like a home game for England but they failed to exert the same kind of dominance on the pitch.

Figo effort
Cristiano Ronaldo and Luis Figo provided Portugal's main attacking threat, switching flanks and running purposefully at the English full-backs. Figo went close after cutting inside from the left and curling a shot just past the far post on 39 minutes.

Ankle knock
David Beckham was forced off with an ankle injury early in the second half and replaced by Aaron Lennon. The pacy Tottenham Hotspur FC winger was soon involved when he dribbled in from the right flank and laid on a decent chance that neither Rooney nor Joe Cole could convert.

Dramatic expulsion
Rooney's frustration boiled over two minutes after the hour when referee Horacio Elizondo adjudged that he trod on Ricardo Carvalho and sent him off. Despite losing their star forward, England regrouped and limited Portugal to a number of half-chances and might have snatched it in stoppage time when John Terry saw a close-range shot deflected over.

Postiga offside
Hélder Postiga finally put the ball in the net for Portugal on 108 minutes but swiftly saw his header ruled out for offside. England had appeals for a penalty turned down in the second period of extra time when Nuno Valente tackled Lennon, but the sides did not have to wait long for action from the spot.
