England and Sweden confirmed their places in the last 16 with a 2-2 draw but an early injury to Michael Owen gave Sven-Göran Eriksson's side cause for concern.
Painful injury
The striker went down in agony within a minute of kick-off in Cologne and had to be stretchered off. Initial reports suggest he twisted his knee but a full scan will take place on Wednesday with many fearing the forward's FIFA World Cup is over. With Peter Crouch replacing Owen, England took the lead in style after 34 minutes as Joe Cole gathered a looping Sweden clearance, chesting the ball down before sending a tremendous dipping volley from 25 metres into the top left-hand corner of Andreas Isaksson's goal.
Dominant form
England ended the half in dominant fashion but were pegged back within six minutes of the restart. John Terry had just blocked Fredrik Ljungberg's shot when a Tobias Linderoth corner caught England cold and Marcus Allbäck glanced the ball home. With English nerves fraying, Henrik Larsson and Olof Mellberg hit the bar and Kim Källström's strike was cleared off the line by substitute Steven Gerrard. Gerrard headed past Isaksson from Joe Cole's cross with five minutes remaining to give England hope of victory, only for Larsson to punish poor defending from Erik Edman's long throw in the closing seconds. Group B winners England face Group A runners-up Ecuador in the next round while Sweden take on hosts Germany.
