Wayne Rooney became England's 50-goal all-time leading scorer with a late penalty against Switzerland as Roy Hodgson's men maintained their perfect record in UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying Group E.
On target from the spot in the 6-0 defeat of San Marino, the Manchester United forward kept his cool in the pressure situation once again to take outright ownership of the record he shared with Sir Bobby Charlton for all of three days.
Harry Kane had broken the deadlock after 67 minutes at Wembley. From Luke Shaw's cut-back across the Switzerland area, the Tottenham Hotspur man struck a crisp, low shot inside the near post of Yann Sommer's goal.
The first half was a low-key affair, albeit one that began with a bang for Fabian Delph as he pulled up with an apparent hamstring injury inside 20 seconds and had to make way for Ross Barkley. Still, England had some more encouraging moments, Rooney rolling an early effort wide of the far post and then playing in James Milner following a quick counterattack in the 19th minute. Milner, however, drove his left-foot shot straight at Sommer.
Yet Vladimir Petković's Switzerland grew into the game. Granit Xhaka, the No10, nearly released Xherdan Shaqiri but the pace on the ball meant it ran away from the Stoke City winger, who could not get there ahead of Joe Hart. There was also an attempt that Josip Drmic dragged across goal, although the lively Swiss fans had to wait until the 57th minute to see Hart make a save, the England No1 keeping out Xhaka's near-post header from a corner.
Kane eventually made the breakthrough with a well-taken effort midway through the half – his third goal in four international outings. Rooney, though, ensured the headlines would be all about him, converting powerfully after Xhaka had fouled Raheem Sterling.
