Estonia v Switzerland background

While Switzerland are already sure of their place at UEFA EURO 2016, Estonia have not entirely given up hope of claiming a play-off place from Group E – although they need a remarkable series of results.

• Switzerland sealed their qualification as Group E runners-up with 7-0 win against San Marino on 9 October, equalling their record UEFA European Championship victory.

• Estonia can only claim a play-off if they win their final game and Slovenia lose to San Marino by a margin that overturns Slovenia's goal-difference advantage. Slovenia's goal difference is currently +5; Estonia's is -4.

Previous meetings
• Fabian Schär, Granit Xhaka and Haris Seferovic scored as Switzerland defeated the Baltic team 3-0 in Lucerne on 27 March.

• In their only previous senior encounters, Roy Hodgson's Switzerland beat Uno Piir's Estonia 6-0 away and 4-0 at home in 1994 FIFA World Cup qualifying. That 6-0 defeat was Estonia's first competitive game since regaining independence.

• Estonia have thus lost all of their previous games against Switzerland without scoring.
