With Italy nearing qualification for UEFA EURO 2016, we look back at one of the highlights of their 2012 campaign – THAT penalty from talisman Andrea Pirlo.
The Azzurri and England had played out 120 goalless minutes in their quarter-final in Kyiv, eliciting spot kicks. There were misses, there were saves and there were histrionics, but there was no doubting the crowning moment. Pirlo dinked his attempt – Italy's third – impishly down the centre, hoodwinking England goalkeeper Joe Hart in a move reminiscent of Antonín Panenka's famous effort in the final of the 1976 UEFA European Championship.
"I decided to do it when I was taking my run-up," said Pirlo, now 36. "I had seen that their goalkeeper was playing up a lot, making funny movements, so I got to the edge of the box, started my run-up and when I got to the ball, I decided to chip it over him. We had deserved to win. We had played better than them, keeping control of the ball."
