I think we've done pretty well, especially away from home and against a really good team. I think we lacked a bit of concentration at the end and they managed to equalise, but overall we can be happy with the performance. It gives us massive confidence going into the next games. I think it speaks about the character of the team, about the players, about us, being unbeaten in the group.
It was a difficult game. Obviously we knew that going into the final minutes they were going to keep on pressing and they were going to put more and more balls into our box. That's what basically happened at the end and they got the equaliser. I think it's a very important point for us. Then again, we were so close to getting three, so we're a little bit disappointed. But we're still unbeaten in the group, so that gives us motivation to work harder and push on for the rest of our qualifiers.
Martin O'Neill, Republic of Ireland manager
It was important for us to get something out of the game. I thought our second-half performance was fantastic and we deserved at least [a point] and we could have won had we scored a little bit earlier. That said, we were a little bit tentative in the first half and maybe a little bit nervous with the crowd cheering us on, but they stayed with us throughout. Overall we're delighted to have got something out of the game, but disappointed maybe we didn't win it because of our second-half performance. But we're still in the competition.
Shane's come on and come up trumps with the goal. I'm absolutely delighted for him and it's a big point for us. Our intentions were always to attack tonight because we had a lot of attacking players. And our intention was to try and get Wes Hoolahan on the ball as much as possible and he delivered that even in the first half; some of us were a little bit off-key but we rectified that in the second half. We've got Scotland next and it's a big game in June – one to look forward to, we'll see how it goes. If we play with the same determination and ability shown in the second half then we'll go close.
Shay Given, Republic of Ireland goalkeeper
We're disappointed obviously with the first-half performance, but we showed a lot of character in the second half and deserved a goal. It was a late goal but we had some big chances and I felt we were the only team who were going to get goals in the second half. It's a big point in the end because it was so late. It's a tight group – probably the toughest group and the tightest group as well – so it will be a big point at the end of the campaign, hopefully, if we qualify. The second-half performance against a good team will give us a lot of belief.
It was important to get something tonight. We would have loved to get three points but if you don't win, you must not lose of course. It's a big point hopefully. It was a great finish by Shane [Long]. It might have taken a nick off a defender, but it was a hugely important goal. His first touch was very good and then he stuck it away – it's an important goal for us.
