Switzerland are taking on Lithuania for the first time at senior international level in UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying Group E, hoping an Olympic Games meeting from 80 years ago will be a good omen for what is to come.
Match background
• The sides have yet to meet in an official game, but came together in the 1924 Olympic football tournament in France, with Switzerland beating Lithuania 9-0 on 25 May; Paolo Sturzenegger (2, 43, 68 and 85), Walter Dietrich (14), Max Abegglen (41, 50 and 58) and Rudolf Ramseyer (63p) were the scorers.
• Swiss and Lithuanian sides have met in two men's UEFA age-limit tournaments, with both games ending in Swiss victories.
• At club level, the only encounter in UEFA competition was a 1996/97 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup qualifying round tie between FC Sion and FK Kareda, which Sion won with a 4-2 home success and a 0-0 draw away.
• That draw remains the only time a Lithuanian side has avoided defeat against Swiss counterparts in nine UEFA fixtures – including women's games and futsal.
