Sweden off the mark against Liechtenstein

Sweden overcame Liechtenstein 2-0 to record their first win in UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying courtesy of a goal in each half from Erkan Zengin and Jimmy Durmaz.

Having started off by drawing against two sides likely to challenge for top spot in Group G – Austria and Russia – Erik Hamrén's men were firm favourites to break their duck on Sunday. But despite Sweden's early dominance, the visitors looked in little danger of conceding, with visiting keeper Cengiz Biçer comfortably dealing with efforts from Emil Forsberg and Albin Ekdal, while Durmaz and Johan Elmander missed the target.

Liechtenstein's resistance was shattered in fortuitous fashion after 34 minutes, however, as Zengin's shot from the left deflected off Ivan Quintans and looped over Biçer into the corner. The second half was less than 30 seconds old when Sweden made it two. This time, Biçer sliced his kick, providing a simple tap-in for the onrushing Durmaz.

Nabil Bahoui came close to extending the hosts' advantage on the stroke of full time after combining with Branimir Hrgota, but Biçer diverted the ball behind. At the other end, Andreas Isaksson was forced to deny Liechtenstein's Michele Polverino after a rare surge from the visitors, but Sweden held firm.
