Pál Dárdai has been confirmed as Hungary coach for the rest of UEFA EURO 2016 qualification after signing a contract until 30 November next year.
Dárdai, 38, became caretaker coach in September after the departure of Attila Pintér following the opening 2-1 home loss to Northern Ireland in Group F. Since then the former international midfielder, capped 61 times, has led Hungary to two wins and a draw, leaving them third in the section.
Having also overseen last month's 2-1 friendly defeat by Russia, Dárdai will retain his role at the academy of Hertha BSC Berlin, where he spent much of his playing career.
"Hertha didn't have to allow this to happen – they are my employers so I especially thank the club that I can continue the work I have started," he said. "Hungary have 13–15 players of international standard and others who could reach that level. Two matches await us, against Greece and Finland, in which we have a chance and I hope the players will arrive for international duty in March as well prepared as they were in autumn."
Hungarian Football Federation (MLSZ) president Sándor Csányi added: "Over the last two months, Pál has shown himself to be what we thought – an exceptional professional. He has brought unity and professionalism to the national team and through his observations has given a huge amount to the players."
