McGeady in the goals for Ireland in Georgia

Aiden McGeady found his scoring boots for the Republic of Ireland as he followed up the first strike of UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying with a spectacular late Group D winner against Georgia in Tbilisi.

McGeady had mustered just three goals in his previous 69 games for his country but came up with two either side of Tornike Okriashvili's equaliser to give Martin O'Neill victory in his first competitive match as Ireland manager. In the final minute of regulation time, McGeady pounced on a loose ball, turned brilliantly and struck from the edge of the box.

The visitors had to work hard as their midfield five strove to create an opening for Robbie Keane but their patience paid off. On 23 minutes, Jonathan Walters won the ball in the air and his flick-down was passed by Keane to James McCarthy, who set up his Everton FC team-mate McGeady to fire past Giorgi Loria.

Georgia drew level on 38 minutes. KRC Genk attacker Okriashvili managed to shrug off defenders John O'Shea and Stephen Ward and rifle in a fierce shot which deceived Ireland keeper David Forde.

Georgia replaced Loria at half-time due to injury but Roin Kvaskhvadze had a largely quiet time as he was well-protected by his defence, Keane failing to hit the target on 60 minutes. The Georgians also struggled to carve out opportunities, with a 67th-minute effort by substitute David Targamadze the best they could do. McGeady was to make them pay.
