Spain (holders)
After decades of underachievement following a UEFA European Championship triumph on home soil in 1964, Spain have become world football's dominant force, triumphing at UEFA EURO 2008 and – having added the FIFA World Cup in South Africa two years later – becoming the first team to successfully defend the Henri Delaunay Cup in Kyiv in 2012.

Ukraine
Ukraine was a prolific resource for the Soviet Union team that won the inaugural UEFA European Championship in 1960 and finished runners-up three times: losing to Spain (1964), West Germany (1972) and the Netherlands (1988), but have featured only once as an independent nation, co-hosting UEFA EURO 2012. Despite a dream start thanks to Andriy Shevchenko's double against Sweden, defeats by France and England meant an early exit.

Slovakia
Eight of the 11 Czechoslovakian players who started the 1976 UEFA European Championship final against West Germany – and triumphed on penalties after a 2-2 draw – hailed from Slovakia, but since the country began competing in the tournament as an independent state there have been three third-place finishes followed by two in fourth.

Belarus
Despite finishing in fourth in their debut campaign ahead of EURO '96, they laid down a marker with a famous 1-0 win against a star-studded Netherlands side in Minsk.

Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia
FYROM's first participation in a competitive tournament as an independent state came with their qualifying bid for EURO '96, starting out with a commendable 1-1 draw against 1992 champions Denmark in Skopje.

Luxembourg
Their most memorable UEFA European Championship performance dates back 50 years to a remarkable 2-1 victory against the Netherlands in Rotterdam that put them into the quarter-finals, where they lost to Denmark – although only after a replay.
