Italy
Europe's most successful nation in the FIFA World Cup with four victories, in 1934, 1938, 1982 and 2006, Italy have been crowned champions of Europe on just one occasion, back in 1968 when they lifted the Henri Delaunay Cup after a replayed final against Yugoslavia in Rome, although they reached the final in both 2000 and 2012 only to lose.

Croatia
UEFA EURO 2012 was Croatia's fourth European final tournament in five attempts since the break-up of Yugoslavia, their only failure coming in 2000. Inspired by three-goal Davor Šuker, Miroslav Blažević's 1996 vintage reached the last eight in their maiden finals appearance, and the semi-finals beckoned in 2008 before Turkey's last-gasp equaliser and then defeat in the penalty shoot-out.

Norway
Norway have come close to qualifying several times but managed to do so only once, in 2000, when the highlight was a 1-0 win against Spain in Rotterdam. Two late Spain goals in the last group game against Yugoslavia denied Norway a place in the quarter-finals.

Bulgaria
Bulgaria won their first six games of the EURO '96 qualifying campaign, a sequence that included a 3-2 home victory against Germany.

Azerbaijan
In UEFA EURO 2012, Azerbaijan accumulated a record-high seven points from ten games, the highlight a stunning 1-0 victory over Turkey. Berti Vogts' side also claimed a 1-1 draw with Belgium and defeated Kazakhstan 3-2, though they failed to pick up a point on their travels.

Malta
Malta have won just three UEFA European Championship matches and have always ended bottom of their qualifying groups, although the 2-0 victory against Greece in 1975 remains one of the nation's football highlights. The goalless draw against West Germany, no less, in 1979 also ranks as one of Malta's finest achievements. Other notable results include 2-1 wins against Iceland in 1982 and Hungary in 2006 and the 1987 2-2 draw in Portugal.
