"It is an honour to continue to serve my country," said Paulo Bento after agreeing to continue as Portugal coach until the end of their UEFA EURO 2016 campaign.

Paulo Bento will lead Portugal until the end of their UEFA EURO 2016 campaign after the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) agreed a two-year extension with the national team coach.

"We made an overall assessment of the period we have worked together and we think that, on the basis of results achieved, working methods, commitment to the FPF and work with other technical areas within the organisation, Paulo Bento should extend his contract for two more years," said FPF president Fernando Gomes. "We are very pleased to be able to continue a project that has paid dividends with not only the senior side but also other national teams."

The 44-year-old Bento has been in charge since September 2010, guiding Portugal to the semi-finals of UEFA EURO 2012 and this summer's FIFA World Cup in Brazil. "It is an honour to continue to serve my country," said the former Portugal midfielder. "I have never hidden the fact I like working at the Portuguese Football Federation, where I feel I can continue to develop a project that aims to get results with the national team but also has a rewarding strategic aspect."
