Morten Olsen has signed a two-year contract extension as Denmark coach, committing him to the post until 30 June 2016.

Olsen, 64, made the agreement with the Danish Football Association (DBU) to remain for the UEFA EURO 2016 campaign despite missing out on the 2014 FIFA World Cup, their record as qualifying Group B runners-up not enough to make the play-offs. During his 13 years at the helm, Denmark have qualified for two World Cups and two UEFA European Championships, reaching the quarter-finals in 2004.

"After finishing top in the two previous qualification rounds for major tournaments, there are probably a lot of people who are annoyed with only finishing second this time and not being part of the World Cup next summer," Olsen told the DBU's official website.

"Now we are putting that disappointment behind us and we will use the experience in a constructive manner. My ambition is to get the national team back on track, for which the players have the potential, and to make the team the national rallying point, which follows from good results."

DBU general secretary Jim Stjerne Hansen added: "Morten Olsen enjoys enormous respect among people in this country and abroad who I consider to possess a qualified knowledge about the coaching market in international football. The faith in him is just as big among the key players in the current national team squad, whom I have had talks with.

"His insight and ability to read trends in international football are unique. At the same time, I have experienced working with this ambitious and motivated national coach with very clear aims for his continued work with the national team and the development of talents in this country."
