Granit Xhaka's goal 16 minutes from time ensured Switzerland ended FIFA World Cup qualifying Group E seven points clear at the top – and dashed Slovenia's play-off hopes.
At kick-off, Slovenia sat only a point behind second-placed Iceland, who were held 1-1 in Norway. Therefore a Slovenia win would have booked a play-off berth but instead they were to be beaten in Berne.
Switzerland had qualified on Friday but knew another good result would boost their chances of seeding for the 6 December finals draw. There were still several changes to Ottmar Hitzeld's side from the victory in Albania, but Xhaka retained his place and settled matters when he received Blerim Dzemaili's pass and shot in from outside the box to decide a largely even contest.
