• The nine group winners and nine runners-up along with the third-placed side with the best record against the teams first, second, fourth and fifth in their section qualify directly for France.
• The eight remaining third-placed teams will contest play-offs in November to determine the last four qualifiers for the finals.

Top two: Iceland (qualified), Czech Republic (qualified)
Third: Turkey

10 October: Iceland v Latvia (18.00CET), Kazakhstan v Netherlands (18.00), Czech Republic v Turkey (20.45)
13 October: Latvia v Kazakhstan, Netherlands v Czech Republic, Turkey v Iceland (all 20.45)
• Both on 19 points, Iceland and the Czech Republic have qualified. With their head-to-head records identical – both sides won 2-1 at home – Iceland lead the way on goal difference.
• Turkey replaced the Netherlands in third spot after defeating the Oranje 3-0 at home on Sunday. Two points ahead of the 1988 winners, Turkey will secure a play-off berth if they draw in the Czech Republic on 10 October and the Dutch lose in Kazakhstan.
Group B
Top two: Wales, Belgium
Third: Israel
Can still qualify: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cyprus
10 October: Andorra v Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina v Wales, Israel v Cyprus (all 20.45)
13 October: Belgium v Israel, Cyprus v Bosnia and Herzegovina, Wales v Andorra (all 20.45)
• Wales are assured of the play-offs after drawing 0-0 at home to third-placed Israel. Chris Coleman's team require a point from their last two matches to qualify automatically.
• Belgium prevailed 1-0 away to Cyprus and will be qualified if they overcome Andorra next time out. Like Wales, Belgium are also certain of at least the play-offs.
• Bosnia and Herzegovina cannot make the top two but closed the gap on Israel, in third, to two points with a 3-0 triumph over Andorra.
Group C
Top two: Spain, Slovakia
Third: Ukraine
9 October: FYR Macedonia v Ukraine, Slovakia v Belarus, Spain v Luxembourg (all 20.45CET)
12 October: Belarus v FYR Macedonia, Luxembourg v Slovakia, Ukraine v Spain (20.45)
• Spain's wins against Slovakia and FYR Macedonia in September lifted the holders into first place. Slovakia are two points behind, three ahead of Ukraine with that trio ensured at least a play-off.
• Spain and Slovakia both qualify on 9 October with wins.
Group D
Top two: Germany, Poland
Third: Republic of Ireland
Can still qualify: Scotland
8 October: Georgia v Gibraltar (18.00), Republic of Ireland v Germany (20.45), Scotland v Poland (20.45)
11 October: Germany v Georgia, Gibraltar v Scotland, Poland v Republic of Ireland (all 20.45)
• Germany's crucial win in Scotland kept them two points ahead of Poland.
• The Republic of Ireland's win against Georgia keeps them within two points of Poland and lifts them four ahead of fourth-placed Scotland.
• Germany, now assured of at least a play-off, will qualify a game early if they avoid defeat in Ireland. Poland could also reach the finals by winning if Ireland fail to beat Germany.
• Scotland must beat Poland and hope Ireland do not win to stay in contention.
Group E
Top two: England (qualified), Switzerland
Third: Slovenia
Can still qualify: Estonia, Lithuania
9 October: England v Estonia, Slovenia v Lithuania, Switzerland v San Marino (all 20.45)
12 October: Estonia v Switzerland, Lithuania v England, San Marino v Slovenia (all 20.45)
• England were the only side to qualify with three games to go and they then beat Switzerland to keep up the sole remaining 100% record and win the group.
• Switzerland's 3-2 comeback win against Slovenia looks a crucial result; they have a three-point gap to their third-placed rivals. Estonia's loss in Slovenia moved them back to fourth, two points behind. Lithuania are one further back thanks to their last-gasp winner against San Marino.
• Slovenia have the head-to-head advantage over Switzerland so a win against Lithuania would definitely keep them in automatic qualification until the final game even if the Swiss beat San Marino.
Group F
Top two: Northern Ireland, Romania
Third: Hungary
Can still qualify: Finland
8 October: Hungary v Faroe Islands, Northern Ireland v Greece, Romania v Finland (all 20.45)
11 October: Faroe Islands v Romania, Finland v Northern Ireland, Greece v Hungary (all 18.00)
• Northern Ireland missed the chance to qualify but still secured a vital point with a last-gasp equaliser at home by Hungary.
• Romania were held 0-0 by Greece but are still one point behind Northern Ireland, and now three in front of Hungary, Finland ended the Faroe Islands' hopes and are within three points of third place.
• Northern Ireland will qualify with victory in either of their October games. Hungary have the head-to-head edge over Romania if they can draw level on points.
Group G
Top two: Austria (qualified), Russia
Third: Sweden
Can still qualify: Montenegro
9 October: Liechtenstein v Sweden, Moldova v Russia, Montenegro v Austria (all 20.45)
12 October: Austria v Liechtenstein, Russia v Montenegro, Sweden v Moldova (all 20.45)
• Austria booked their place in France with a win in Sweden that confirms them in first place.
• Russia are now second, two points ahead of Sweden, thanks to their win which ended Liechtenstein's hopes. Montenegro are within a point of Sweden.
• If Russia win in Moldova and both Sweden and Montenegro drop points, they qualify with a game to spare.
Group H
Top two: Italy, Norway
Third: Croatia
10 October: Azerbaijan v Italy (18.00), Norway v Malta (18.00), Croatia v Bulgaria (20.45)
13 October: Bulgaria v Azerbaijan, Italy v Norway, Malta v Croatia (all 20.45)
• Italy, 1-0 winners against Bulgaria on Sunday, are four points clear of third-placed Croatia and will qualify if they match the Adriatic side's result next time out.
• Norway climbed into second spot, two points above Croatia, by beating their qualification rivals 2-0 in Oslo.
• Italy and Norway are sure to finish in the top three.
Group I
Top two: Portugal, Denmark
Third: Albania
8 October: Albania v Serbia, Portugal v Denmark (both 20.45)
11 October: Armenia v Albania, Serbia v Portugal (both 18.00)
• In the sole five-team group, Miguel Veloso's last-gasp goal gave Portugal victory in Albania and a three-point lead over Denmark, who have played a game more.
• Albania, who also have a game in hand on Denmark, are a further point behind. The top three are assured a least a play-off; in head-to-head terms, Denmark have the edge over Albania.
• Portugal will qualify by drawing with Denmark on 8 October. If Denmark do not win, Albania will also book a top-two finish with victory against Serbia. Denmark, by contrast, will qualify if they win and Albania do not.
