Marko Arnautovic knows Austria's UEFA EURO 2016 finals dream has not come true yet, but a 1-0 win in Russia underlined his side's class. "We are a good team and we know what our quality is," he told UEFA.com.
Austria have never qualified for a UEFA European Championship – their only final tournament appearance came as co-hosts in 2008 – but the Stoke City FC forward is not booking his flight to France just yet, even though Marcel Koller's charges lead Group G with 16 points.
"We are still not there," said the 26 year-old. "We have one of the hardest games behind us, we won, but the matches that are coming up are still tough because we are getting closer to the EUROs. We have a good points total, but we are still not in France."
Success in Moscow owed much to camaraderie, Austria's verve evident even without star man David Alaba, who missed the trip with a knee injury. "We have a great spirit and we feel this throughout the team," said captain Christian Fuchs, who marshalled the visitors' defence expertly. "We are behind one another so I see a lot of potential for the future."
Defensively resilient, they also showed flashes of brilliance, not least through Marc Janko's stunning overhead kick, which, in the end, proved decisive. "Everyone was saying beforehand that Austria are too weak, but we have done very well over the last two years," Arnautovic noted. "All our players are with good clubs across Europe. We are a good team and we know what our quality is."
Defeat leaves Russia third in the section with eight points from six fixtures. Fabio Capello handed competitive debuts to four players, but his side looked tentative for long periods. One of those debutants, Ivan Novoseltsev, accepted that a lack of "clinical finishing" had been the hosts' undoing and acknowledged that Russia are out of the running for top spot.
"We have still got four games to go and we need to play at 100%, perhaps even 200%, to try and secure second spot," the FC Rostov player concluded.
