Moldova hold Liechtenstein after Wieser stunner

Moldova earned only their second point in UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying as they came from behind to prevent Liechtenstein beating them again in Group G.

Setting out in search of their sixth victory in UEFA European Championship preliminaries, René Pauritsch's side looked well set for the win after Sandro Wieser's stunner. However, Gheorghe Boghiu got things level ahead of the break, before Moldova toiled in vain to find the winner that would have lifted them off the foot of the section.

The home side flew out of the traps as they looked to complete a double over the visitors following their 1-0 success in Chisinau in November, and Martin Büchel, Andreas Christen and Seyhan Yildiz all had shots blocked in a mad scramble in the opening seconds. Daniel Kaufmann also had a header turned off the line, while Anatoli Cheptine served warning at the other end when his snapshot was clawed away by Peter Jehle.

Igor Armaş then saved Moldova with another pair of last-gasp blocks, before Liechtenstein broke the deadlock with a brilliant goal. Wieser cut in from the right flank and arrowed an unstoppable shot into the top corner via the underside of the crossbar from 30 metres.

Franz Burgmeier volleyed wide when presented a chance to double the lead, yet it was Alexandru Curteian's charges who registered next. Although Jehle saved superbly at the feet of Artur Patraş, Moldova were not to be denied – and Nicolae Milinceanu took advantage of Kaufmann's mistake on the right to zip into the area and set up Boghiu.

Cătălin Carp drove just off-target shortly after the restart for the visitors and Boghiu headed over at the back post as Moldova dominated proceedings in the second period. Robin Gubser nodded too high from close range as the hosts stated their own case, but Boghiu threatened again when he nodded against the crossbar late on. Ultimately, neither side could muster the all-important second goal.
