Torres scores four in comprehensive Spain win

Spain flexed their goalscoring muscles in a 10-0 defeat of Tahiti in Rio de Janeiro which edged them closer to a place in the FIFA Confederations Cup semi-finals.

Tahiti, who began the tournament with a 6-1 reverse against Nigeria on Monday, fell behind after five minutes as Fernando Torres combined with Chelsea FC club-mate Juan Mata and swept in at the front post. The Oceania champions held out until David Silva slotted in after taking receipt of David Villa's visionary pass 26 minutes later. Torres swiftly made it three, before Villa stabbed Silva's centre past goalkeeper Mickaël Roche. 

Nacho Monreal's lung-bursting run allowed Villa to score his 55th international goal four minutes into the second half. Manchester City FC winger Jesús Navas had replaced Sergio Ramos at the break and made his mark by teeing up Torres's hat-trick strike, before Villa sealed a treble of his own. 

Tahiti's sporadic forays past the halfway line were met by raucous cheers of approval from the Maracanã crowd and Spain's eighth – courtesy of Mata – did little to dampen spirits. Indeed, the volume inside Brazil's iconic stadium reached a crescendo when Torres hit the bar from the spot but he soon made amends.

Silva added the final flourish with a minute remaining to move Vicente del Bosque's team onto six points at the Group B summit, three clear of Nigeria and Uruguay. The South American side beat the African champions 2-1 in the late kick-off.
