PSV Eindhoven and the Netherlands may be without winger Luciano Narsingh for nine months after the 22-year-old sustained a serious knee injury.
Narsingh came off 13 minutes from the end of PSV's final Eredivisie game of 2012, having scored the fifth goal in a 6-1 win at NAC Breda on 22 December. After a short break, the PSV medical staff discovered that the injury was more serious than first anticipated. The summer signing from sc Heerenveen underwent surgery on Wednesday, which involved the reconstruction of his frontal cruciate knee ligament and work on the meniscus. The club say they expect his recovery period to be "six to nine months".
The six-times capped international will therefore be unavailable for the rest of the league leaders' Eredivisie campaign. Whether he will be fit for any of the Netherlands' remaining FIFA World Cup qualifying Group D fixtures, having featured in three of their first four outings, is also doubtful.
