Romania catch the eye on night of friendlies

Aside from Sweden's victory against England and France's win in Italy, Romania recorded one of the most eye-catching results in Wednesday's busy programme of international friendlies.

Facing a Belgium side top of FIFA World Cup qualifying Group A with ten points from their first four fixtures, Romania prevailed 2-1 despite going behind to Christian Benteke's opener midway through the first half. Alexandru Maxim levelled the scores just after the half hour and Gabriel Torje secured the victory in the second half.

Meanwhile, Portugal, without the talismanic Cristiano Ronaldo, were held 2-2 by Gabon. Scotland, under the temporary charge of Billy Stark following last week's departure of manager Craig Levein, won 2-1 in Luxembourg to register their first victory in five attempts. There were also notable wins for Greece, Norway, Spain and the Former Yugolsav Republic of Macedonia, while Turkey drew 1-1 with Denmark and Austria lost against the Ivory Coast.
