Portugal winger Nani has been ruled out of the FIFA World Cup because of an injury to his left collarbone.

The 23-year-old Manchester United FC player has scored seven goals in 36 appearances for Portugal. He featured in both of his country's World Cup warm-up matches against Cape Verde Islands and Cameroon, scoring in the 3-1 victory against the latter on 1 June after coming on as a half-time substitute.

He sat out training on Saturday, however, and the decision was taken on Tuesday that he is not fit enough to take part in the tournament. It is not known how long Nani will be out for with no details of the extent of the injury being released.

Uncapped SL Benfica midfielder Ruben Amorim has been called up as replacement. The 25-year-old progressed through the youth ranks at Benfica but spent six seasons at CF Os Belenenses, before returning to the Estádio da Luz in 2008/09 and helping the club to the league title this season. He is a versatile midfielder who is comfortable in a holding role or in more attacking positions centrally and wide right, and can also play right-back.

Portugal kick off their Group G campaign against the Ivory Coast next Tuesday before taking on Korea DPR and Brazil.
