Kežman finish
Igor Duljaj crossed deep to Nikola Žigić, who centred for Club Atlético de Madrid man Kežman to slot in from close range - his fourth goal in as many matches for his country. The home side continued to dominate, and could easily have gone further in front through captain Mladen Krstajić, who had chances in the 20th and 35th minutes.
Defensive security
Although a win would have guaranteed the visitors at least a play-off place, they did not produce their best football and failed to get a shot on target in the first half. Serbia and Montenegro - who went into the match two points clear of the Spanish at the head of the standings but needing victory to make sure of progressing - proved virtually impregnable, showing the defensive form that has allowed their Group 7 opponents just one goal in ten qualifying matches.
Vidić sent off
In fact, most of the threat came from Ilja Petkovic's side, Krstajić having another opportunity on the hour, but his effort was denied by an agile save from Kenan Hasagić. Two minutes later Vedin Musić forced goalkeeper Dragoslav Jevrić into his first action of the evening with a 30-metre drive. But the visitors came no closer, even after a second yellow card for Nemanja Vidić saw the hosts reduced to ten. With Spain winning 6-0 in San Marino elsewhere tonight, the Serbo-Montenegrins held firm for the crucial victory, to the delight of their fans.
