Anastasiadis appointed by Cyprus

Angelos Anastasiadis, who was sacked by PAOK FC in September, is the new national team coach of Cyprus.

Appointment confirmed
The appointment of Anastasiadis, 52, was confirmed by Kostakis Koutsokoumnis, the president of the Cyprus Football Association, and national team executive Tassos Katsikides, who said that the final details of his three-year-deal would be signed next week.

Little chance
Anastasiadis takes over a team struggling at the bottom of their FIFA World Cup qualifying group with just one point from their opening five matches. Cyprus are currently propping up Group 4 alongside the Faroe Islands and have little chance of reaching the 2006 finals in Germany.

Greek experience
Anastasiadis, who was capped 12 times by Greece, played for Greek sides PAOK, Panathinaikos FC, Korinthos FC, Diagora Rhodes FC and had a brief stint in the United States. He has coached Diagora, Panargeiako FC, FC Kavala, Edessaikos FC, PAOK (three times), Iraklis FC and Panathinaikos.

Cup success
After two previous spells at PAOK between February 1997 and March 1999, he returned to the club for a third time as coach in 2002 and led them to victory in the Greek Cup final in 2003. But after a poor start to this season he was sacked by PAOK at the end of September.
