Who is Italy coach?

Luciano Spalletti's coaching career that stretches back nearly 30 years and which includes trophies won with Roma, Zenit and, perhaps most memorably, Napoli, where he earned the club their first Serie A title since 1990 in 2022/23. Spalletti took the Italy job in September 2023, and guided the Azzurri through their qualification group as they edged just ahead of Ukraine.

Italy key player: Nicolò Barella

The Sardinian was already a key member of the Italy midfield trio that helped the Azzurri win the trophy in 2021, but the 27-year-old is now at a career peak after reaching the UEFA Champions League final with Inter in 2023 and winning the Scudetto with the Nerazzurri this season. With boundless energy, technique, creativity and leadership, Barella is a valuable asset in several respects.

Italy one to watch: Alessandro Buongiorno

Replacing old lions like Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci was never going to be easy, but Italy are discovering new names to marshal their defence and Buongiorno is one of them. The Torino captain made his Italy debut in the Nations League finals last June, with his second cap coming in November’s crucial 0-0 draw with Ukraine. Rock solid and elegant in defence, the young man with the cheerful surname has a degree in Business Administration, just like Chiellini.

How did Italy qualify for EURO 2024?

Group C runners-up: P8 W4 D2 L2 F16 A9
The holders, who started their campaign under Roberto Mancini and ended it coached by Spalletti, qualified in dramatic fashion. Beaten home and away by Group C winners England – the same team they defeated on penalties to lift the trophy in 2021 – the Azzurri held on for a goalless draw against Ukraine when defeat would have pushed them down to third.
