Italy survived a scare to beat Ukraine to the FIFA Women's World Cup qualifying play-off final.
Taking a 2-1 lead to Lviv, Italy fell behind on away goals to a 26th-minute strike from Vira Dyatel, who scored again early in the second half. The outstanding Melania Gabbiadini levelled the aggregate scoreline not long afterwards and with 11 minutes to go Patrizia Panico's 108th Italy goal, followed by Lyudmyla Pekur's second yellow card, ended Ukraine's hopes of reaching their first World Cup.
Italy will be at home in the second leg of the play-off final on 22/23 and 26/27 November. They will meet Scotland or the Netherlands, who defend a 2-1 lead in Rotterdam on Thursday.
