Spain beat England despite Flint wondergoal

Spain struck twice in the last eight minutes to complete their recovery after Natasha Flint's wondergoal and consign England to a second loss in WU19 EURO Group B.

Flint's ninth-minute effort from halfway looked to have eliminated any residual disappointment following Monday's late defeat by Germany. Yet after Pilar Garrote equalised soon after half-time, those memories came flooding back for England as Alba Redondo and Rocío Gálvez earned Spain a 3-1 win.

Having beaten Norway 4-0 on Monday, Jorge Vilda's side are now all but through to the last four, though they did not have things completely their own way at Ramla. They were soon behind as Flint caught Elena De Toro off her line with an audacious effort from the halfway line.

Spain were soon on the hunt for an equaliser, with Sandra Hernández and Nahikari García both threatening before the interval. England were not giving much quarter, though, and the second half started in a similar vein as both teams played with committed aggression.

Pilar Garrote made it 1-1 nine minutes after the break and the game remained in the balance until the closing stages when two set pieces proved England's undoing. First Nuria Garrote's free-kick was headed in by Redondo, then on 90 minutes a Leire Baños corner was converted by Gálvez to leave England needing to beat Norway on Tuesday and hope Spain beat Germany.

Jorge Vilda, Spain coach: "We controlled the match from the beginning; they scored the opener but it didn't affect us. In the second half the reaction was extraordinary, we managed to neutralise all of their attacks and were far more precise in our chances. We know we haven't qualified yet, and we still have one match to go to achieve that."

Mo Marley, England manager: "We took the initiative with the goal and are a bit disappointed in the manner we've conceded goals – set plays. At this level, the feedback I have to give to the players is that it comes down to fine margins. We're happy with the way we're playing. We've done exceptionally well and we are quiet an inexperienced team. Overall we're happy with the performance."
