Fulham fire on all cylinders

Group 8 round-up: Fulham LFC opened their UEFA Women's Cup account in impressive fashion.

Fulham LFC opened their UEFA Women's Cup account in impressive fashion as they reached the quarter-finals ahead of Dutch Group 8 hosts Ter Leede.

Eight-goal start
Arsenal LFC - the side deposed as English champions last season - reached at least the last eight of both previous tournaments, and Fulham showed their intentions to emulate their London rivals by opening with an 8-0 win against KÍ Klaksvík.

Yankey opens scoring
Rachel Yankey opened the scoring against the Faroe Islands-based side in the sixth minute and five other women found the target - Katie Chapman and Tammy Waine twice.

Hosts win
Ter Leede won by the same score against Moldovans FC Codru Anenii Noi. It was 4-0 at half-time, and Ilse Witteman and Stefanie Dijkhuizen both scored twice in the game.

Fulham again impress
It was Fulham who edged in front ahead of the final-day decider as they overcame Codru 9-1. Again Chapman and Waine were double goalscorers, with Yankey, Michelle Hickmott, Rachel McArthur and Sarah Flint also registering.

Van Eyk double
The hosts overcame KÍ 5-0. Sabine van Eyk scored twice in the first ten minutes, with Saskia Drommel and Karin Legemate adding further first-half goals, and Witteman on target in the final seconds.

Entertaining game
Whle Codru and KÍ were now out, they still played out an entertaining contest for third place, the Moldovans trailing 3-1 at the break but triumphing 5-3 helped largely by four goals from Daniela Pufulete.

Ter Leede bid ends
However, the crucial game resulting in delight for Fulham as they beat Ter Leede 3-1. Corinne Yorston struck Fulham into a ninth-minute lead, but that was cancelled out on the stroke of half-time by Jeanet van der Laan's penalty.

Second half decisive
Yankey restored Fulham's advantage on the hour, though, and with five minutes left Yorston scored again to clinch victory and a place in the knockout stage for the west Londoners.
