Last season's UEFA Women's Cup runners-up have appointed Shek Borkowski as coach after the Polish technician's successful spell in charge of American club FC Indiana.

Title retained
Borkowski, who will be assisted by former Bulgarian long-distance runner Kaloyan Petkov, led Indiana to an unprecedented Women's Professional Soccer League and US Women's Open Cup double in 2005, plus the 2007 league title another cup in 2008, and gained a repuation for spotting European talent. Previous Zvezda coach Aleksandr Grigoryan stepped down after the first leg of their UEFA Women's Cup final defeat by FCR 2001 Duisburg in May, and sporting director Stanislav Kharitonov took caretaker charge, successfully retaining the Russian title.

Kharitonov's delight
Kharitonov said: "We are delighted that we were able to replace a great coach Grigoriyan with another great coach, Borkowski. We hope that our team will continue to improve and will only move forward as we target winning every tournament that we participate in." The club website added: "Some significant signings are expected to be made in the off-season after the Pole vowed to 'take the club forward'." Zvezda face Norway's Røa IL in the first leg of the round of 16 of the UEFA Women's Champions League on 4 November with the return tie a week later.
