Valur take Icelandic Cup

Valur Reykjavík added the Icelandic Cup to their league triumph with a penalty shoot-out win against UEFA Women's Cup contenders Breidablik.

European contenders denied
Breidablik, who face Group B1 hosts HJK Helsinki, holders 1. FFC Frankfurt and Belarussian side Universitet Vitebsk in the UEFA Women's Cup second qualifying round this week had already given up their league title to Valur, and were now defending their other major domestic trophy.

Penalty drama
After 90 minutes the scores were level at 2-2, and the game was also tie half an hour later after side had added a goal, Valur's prolific Margrét Lára Vidarsdóttir completing a hat-trick. She then opened the scoring in the shoot-out and Valur goalkeeper Gudbjörg Gunnarsdóttir immediately made a save. It was 3-1 to Valur when Breidablik's third penalty went over the bar, and their cup hopes had gone.

Coach relieved
"Like at everybody else I was on the edge of my seat," Valur coach Elisabet Gunnarsdóttir said. "In this game the teams took turns controlling the game but both sides showed good effort. We never gave up but Breidablik did not either." Gunnarsdóttir has now extended her contract for next three years, and thanks to the league victory can prepare for a European return in 2007/08.
