Record-holder Pohlers honoured at testimonial

"Everything I have achieved is more than I dreamt of," said Conny Pohlers, the UEFA Women's Champions League's all-time top scorer, following her testimonial.

Conny Pohlers, the all-time leading scorer in the UEFA Women's Champions League who retired last season, received a fitting ovation at her testimonial this weekend.

Pohlers not only found the net 48 times in the UEFA Women's Champions League; she also won the tournament on four occasions. It was, therefore, little surprise that the biggest names in women's football showed up on Sunday. As well as those four continental crowns – two each with 1. FFC Frankfurt and VfL Wolfsburg – Pohlers has also claimed the world and European titles with Germany.

'Conny's All Stars' took on 'Andrea's Dream Team' – formed to honour long-time Wolfsburg servant Andrea Wilkens, who also retired last term – in front of 1,200 fans in Lower Saxony. Players such as Birgit Prinz, Silke Rottenberg and Ariane Hingst were involved, with those on the field boasting an aggregate of more than 1,000 international caps. Pohlers, however, stole the show with three goals and an assist.

"Everything I have achieved is more than I dreamt of – I did everything right," said the 35-year-old. Martina Müller, a colleague for club and country, added: "Two long-time colleagues are saying goodbye and I don't want to forget those two. 'BumBum' Conny Pohlers was always capable of scoring and Andrea had been at VfL since 2003 and experienced all the highs and lows."

While Wilkens has already hinted that she might be able to help out Wolfsburg if required, Pohlers is already planning for life off the pitch. Together with her former Germany team-mate Navina Omilade she has founded a sports management agency for women's football.

"Our common dream was to make women's football in Germany even more professional with the help of our experience," she said. "Our expert support ensures active players the best possible conditions for their personal and athletic development."
