Frankfurt survive, favourites prevail

Three-time winners 1. FFC Frankfurt produced a fine comeback while holders Olympique Lyonnais and former victors Arsenal LFC and 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam progressed comfortably as the first ten UEFA Women's Champions League round of 32 ties finished with all the seeded home teams prevailing.

Frankfurt suffered a surprise 1-0 loss to Stabæk FK in Norway last week but with Sara Thunebro back in their lineup the pressure told within six minutes as Saskia Bartusiak volleyed in Melanie Behringer's free-kick. The visitors nearly had an away goal when Nadine Angerer fouled Kristy Moore in the box, but the Germany No1 made amends by saving Katrine Pedersen's penalty.

The German side were ahead on aggregate on 37 minutes when Kerstin Garefrekes set up Sandra Smisek, and although Stabæk had their moments after the break, Jessica Landström extended the lead. After Moore pulled one back, substitute Ana Maria Crnogorčević – within seconds of her introduction – sealed a 4-2 aggregate win.

In the round of 16 in the first two weeks of November, Frankfurt will meet French debutants Paris Saint-Germain FC, who beat a stubborn Peamount United 3-0 on the night and 5-0 on aggregate, Nora Coton-Pelagie, a scorer in both legs, catching the eye along with midfielder Kenza Dali.

PSG's French rivals Lyon were 9-0 up ahead of CFF Olimpia Cluj's visit to Stade de Gerland and two Camille Abily strikes either side of a goal from substitute Eugénie Le Sommer gave the holders a 3-0 win. AC Sparta Praha will take on Lyon next after two strikes from the outstanding Lucie Martínková defeated Apollon Limassol LFC 2-1 for a tight 4-3 aggregate success.

An Anja Mittag-inspired Potsdam ended Thór/KA's debut campaign 14-2 overall after an 8-2 home win, and may face more Icelandic opposition if Valur Reykjavík oust Glasgow City LFC in one of six second legs on Thursday.

Arsenal LFC, who will also have to wait for their next tie to be confirmed, defeated FC Bobruchanka 6-0 having won 4-0 in Belarus last week. Arsenal are the only English team remaining after newcomers Bristol Academy LFC, who held FC Energiya Voronezh 1-1 in the first leg, lost 4-2 in Russia, two Olesya Mashina goals before the break putting the hosts in control.

Elsewhere, 2003 runners-up Fortuna Hjørring came from behind in the last four minutes to beat BSC Young Boys 2-1, and 5-1 on aggregate. Italian champions ASD Torres CF, 2-0 up from the first leg, trailed twice to visitors ASA Tel-Aviv before winning 3-2.

Austria's SV Neulengbach emulated Frankfurt by overturning a first-leg deficit; 2-1 down to CSHVSM of Kazakhstan at kick-off they won the home return 5-0 despite Monica Hickmann Alves having an early penalty saved by Oksana Zheleznyak.
