Article body
France qualified for the UEFA European Under-19 Championship finals at the expense of Spain despite being reduced to nine men en route to defeating the title holders 1-0 in their Elite round Group 3 decider.
Solid defending
Both sides went into the match on six points, although Spain, with the superior goal difference, required just a draw to advance to the finals in Northern Ireland. The Group 3 mini-tournament hosts set out for victory, but were constantly denied by a resolute French defence. Jurado came closest to opening the scoring for Spain during the first half, but his effort just missed the target.
Gourcuff winner
The game's only goal came courtesy of a lapse of concentration in the Spanish defence which allowed Yohan Gourcuff to beat Fernando Casilla on 57 minutes. The home side stove for an equaliser thereafter, but were unable to break through.
Red cards
Even when France were reduced to nine men following the dismissals of Franck Dja Djedje and Yohan Cabaye, Spain were unable to capitalise. France finish top on nine points after winning all three of their matches, with Spain three points adrift in second place.
