Roma into Youth league semis after beating City

• Tomáš Vestenický and Lorenzo Pellegrini goals secure last-four spot for Roma
• Nine-man city respond through late Thierry Ambrose penalty
• Elio Capradossi becomes third man to be dismissed in conceding spot kick
• Italian side gain revenge for two Group E losses inflicted by City
• Roma face Chelsea in the first semi-final on 10 April at Nyon's Colovray Stadium

AS Roma progressed to a UEFA Youth League semi-final against Chelsea FC after turning tables on a Manchester City FC side that beat them twice in the group stage.

Patrick Vieira's City defeated the Giallorossi 2-1 and 4-0 in Group E but goals from Tomáš Vestenický and Lorenzo Pellegrini secured a last-four place for Roma. Thierry Ambrose's late penalty gave City hope in a frantic game which saw Kean Bryan and Jack Byrne sent off for the visitors and Elio Capradossi dismissed for the home side.

Pellegrini curled just wide within the first two minutes while Ambrose brought a very sharp early save out of Gabriele Marchegiani. Christian D'Urso slipped an effort just wide of the post for Roma before Marchegiani saved a drilled effort from Bersant Celina in an end-to-end first period.

City captain Bryan received a second yellow in the 59th minute and Roma took advantage almost immediately. D'Urso's volley at goal was blocked but Vestenický pounced on the rebound and smashed into the net. Bersant Celina then hit the base of the post for the home team before City's hopes received a further hammer blow as Byrne picked up a second booking.

Again the hosts immediately struck, Pellegrini crashing in an unstoppable, dipping shot from 25 metres. Capradossi pulled back Jose Tasende in the area to receive his marching orders and Ambrose thumped in the resulting spot kick, but it was too late to stop Roma advancing to a Nyon showdown with Chelsea on 10 April.
