Jorge Sampaoli will take charge of Sevilla for the first time against Real Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup in Trondheim – UEFA.com remembers the other coaches since 1998 whose first task in their new job came in this fixture.
1998: Guus Hiddink (Real Madrid)
Hiddink succeeded Jupp Heynckes, who had won the UEFA Champions League with a 1-0 victory over Juventus, in summer 1998 and oversaw his new team for the first time in Monaco on 28 August. However, Chelsea – who would employ Hiddink in both 2009 and 2015/16 – prevailed 1-0, and the Dutchman ended up leaving Madrid by February 1999.
2004: Víctor Fernández (Porto)
With José Mourinho having departed for Chelsea after lifting the UEFA Cup (2003) and UEFA Champions League (2004), Porto picked Real Betis coach Fernández as his replacement. The Spaniard's first job outside his homeland started with a 2-1 loss to Valencia in Monaco, Porto's second UEFA Super Cup defeat, and again his reign proved short-lived: he was dismissed in February 2005.
2004: Claudio Ranieri (Valencia)
Fernández's conqueror at Stade Louis II was back at Valencia for a second spell, Rafael Benítez moving on to Liverpool having landed the UEFA Cup. Ranieri's first Mestalla stint had brought glory in the 1999 Copa del Rey and his second began with more silverware after the scalp of Porto. Even so, like Hiddink and Fernández, he would leave his post in February of the following year.
