Apollon Limassol FC became the first Cypriot club to avoid defeat in Poland as Gaston Sangoy struck the winner against Legia Warszawa.

The forward had earlier missed a penalty for the visitors but struck in the 56th minute to earn a historic success. As a result, Christakis Christoforou's side go into their double-header with SS Lazio in third spot in Group J, a point behind their next opponents and matchday one conquerors Trabzonspor AŞ.

It was the hosts who had more of the opportunities in the first half, but the clearest opening fell to Apollon. Home goalkeeper Wojciech Skaba brought down Fotis Papoulis in the area, yet he was reprieved when Sangoy skied the penalty over the crossbar in the 24th minute.

Earlier, Legia should have opened the scoring on seven minutes, only for Henrik Ojamaa to drive against the bar from Miroslav Radović's perfect pass, and the same man was denied by Isli Hidi shortly after. The Estonian international was not having his best night in front of goal and was bested once again by Hidi on the stroke of half-time.

Legia attempted to press on after the restart but were caught out. Breaking on the counter, Roberto slipped in Sangoy and the Argentinian player beat Skaba with ease. Tomasz Jodłowiec and Michał Żyro were both unable to find the net for the hosts from good positions, and Apollon could have doubled their lead on 80 minutes, but Dossa Júnior cleared the ball off the line after Roberto thought he had scored.
