An added-time winner by Ivica Majstorovic kept Panionios GSS's UEFA Cup destiny in their own hands but ended FK Austria Wien's hopes of progressing beyond the group stage.
Vital strike
Majstorovic scored the only goal of the game a minute into added time with a neat close-range finish to give the Greek Super League side all three points. The result at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion means the home side remain bottom of Group H without a point from three games, while Panionios move up to third place and will qualify for the last 32 provided they match or better Galatasaray AS's result in the final round of fixtures on 19 December.
Opening salvos
It was the home side who began the match the brighter and could have opened the scoring in the 14th minute. Panionios midfielder Manolis Scoufalis fouled Andreas Lasnik who just cleared the crossbar from the resulting free-kick. The away side responded and created a good opening four minutes later when Rafik Djebbour found space on the left edge of the penalty area but his shot was saved by Sašo Fornezzi. Both sides had long-range attempts at goal as the half wore on but neither goalkeeper was seriously tested.
Dramatic winner
The second half was a more open affair and Panionios enjoyed the better chances. Fanourios Goundoulakis missed a good opportunity in the 63rd minute meeting an inswinging corner from Nikos Spiropoulos but directing his header over. The visitors then went close again this time through Majstorovic who had a close-range header well saved. However, the winner finally arrived right at the death when Dario Fernandez picked out fellow midfielder Majstorovic with an intelligent cross from the left flank which the German-born player despatched past Fornezzi.
