Caneira spent last season on loan at the Ligue 1 side from UEFA Champions League semi-finalists Internazionale FC, and the versatile Portuguese international has now signed a four-year contract with the French club.
'Attractive club'
"Bordeaux are an attractive enough club for me to develop my career and keep improving," said Caneira, who has also played for Sporting Clube de Portugal, SL Benfica and Reggina Calcio. The 24-year-old made 30 league appearances in 2002/03 and has won two international caps.
Two more years
Fellow Portuguese defender Basto joined Bordeaux from Benfica in summer 2000, and has extended his contract, which was due to expire in 2005, for a further two seasons. The 25-year-old left-back and former Portugal Under-21 international played 27 out of 34 league games during the last campaign.
